    About our April selection:

This luminous story begins in the present day, when a professor invites a colleague to his home to see a painting that he has kept secret for decades. The professor swears it is a Vermeer--but why has he hidden this important work for so long? The reasons unfold in a series of events that trace the ownership of the painting back to World War II and Amsterdam, and still further back to the moment of the work's inspiration. As the painting moves through each owner's hands, what was long hidden quietly surfaces, illuminating poignant moments in multiple lives. Susan Vreeland's characters remind us, through their love of this mysterious painting, how beauty transforms and why we reach for it, what lasts and what in our lives is singular and unforgettable.

New participants are warmly welcomed at all HNC Book Club gatherings.  Please come join us!

    • March 19, 7:30 pm Book Club will meet at Pamela’s house for a lively discussion of An American Marriage by Tayari Jones.  Thank you Pamela for the great suggestion and for hosting this month!

Due to the popularity of this title, we were not able to place a group hold for Book Club members. However, individual copies of An American Marriage are readily obtained through the Minuteman Library Network book request system.

We would love to have some new host locations for the April, May and June meetings.   If you are interested, please let us know. About our March selection:

Newlyweds Celestial and Roy are the embodiment of both the American Dream and the New South. He is a young executive, and she is an artist on the brink of an exciting career. But as they settle into the routine of their life together, they are ripped apart by circumstances neither could have imagined. Roy is arrested and sentenced to twelve years for a crime Celestial knows he didn't commit. Though fiercely independent, Celestial finds herself bereft and unmoored, taking comfort in Andre, her childhood friend, and best man at their wedding. As Roy's time in prison passes, she is unable to hold on to the love that has been her center. This stirring love story is a profoundly insightful look into the hearts and minds of three people who are at once bound and separated by forces beyond their control. An American Marriage is a masterpiece of storytelling, an intimate look deep into the souls of people who must reckon with the past while moving forward--with hope and pain--into the future.

A goal of the the Holliston Newcomers Club is to give back to our community. One of the ways this is accomplished is in the form of grants. Grant money is raised during the various fundraising activities held throughout the year. The 2018 fundraising events that contributed to the 2019 Grant fund were Princess & Superhero Party, Touch-A-Truck, The Great Pumpkin Trail, and Gingerbread House Decorating.

The Community Investments Committee publishes the availability of the grants, collects and reviews grant requests, and proposes the distribution of the grant fund.  Participation on the committee is defined in the by-laws. This year the committee members are Christel DiPippo (HNC President), Robin Bowman (Fundraising Chair), Beth Welch (member >5 years), Sue Hatton (member <2 years), and myself (member at-large and chair).

The grant criteria and application were approved at the January General meeting and published to the community through The Holliston Reporter and Holliston Facebook pages. The committee is currently reviewing those submissions and will present the requests and the committee’s proposal for approval at the March General Meeting scheduled on Wednesday, March 27th at 7:30 pm.  This is the membership’s opportunity to give input into this important process.

The Community Investments Committee can also be reached via email at HNCCommunityInvestments@gmail.com.
